I took an early train from Vicenza and went to the nearby city of Verona for my next stop. I have heard of the name Verona before but I didn’t really know what is there to see here. Like most cities the main train station is outside the city to alleviate any traffic. The train station of Verona is just good walk away from the city center. Since it was still early in the morning, I thought to just keep my backpack with me while I go around the city. I took my time to go to the city center of Verona and I passed by the old city gates.

One would have to remember that it used to be that the main method of defense of a city was the city wall. The better the well, the better the defense. The Venetians were masters of this art of city defense as I found out earlier in the visit to northeast Italy. I was approaching what is called the Porta Nuova. This is actually more of an external city gate than the actual city gate which is still further in. This particular gate was built in the middle of the sixteenth century. Right now the city gate sits on what is now an island created by two roads which lead in and out of the city. Most of the gate was preserved and it can still be visited up close.
