It was already night time was Český Krumlov and my friends and I were ready for dinner. However, we were having problems looking for a place to eat. The open restaurants by the river were beyond our budget while the one at the Svornosti Square was fully booked. Even this hotel we checked out was also fully booked for dinner. I didn’t expect to have difficulty looking for a place for dinner. I’m even surprised to see some of them closed. I guess, it is because not too many people are here this time of the year and it doesn’t make business sense to open for a handful of visitors. Perhaps they make it all back when the tourist season opens.

Anyway, we were making our way back to our accommodation where we remember seeing some restaurants. Indeed there were a handful that were still open but we ended up picking this rather rustic looking spot – Hospoda Na Louži. It has a nice little tavern feel and looking at the prices on the menu, it seemed to be rather affordable. In fact, there were some locals who were eating here. I take that as a good sign that this is a familiar haunt for some people. It was rather difficult to take photos here since it was rather dark as you can see. I guess that adds to the charm of the place. While my photo would show an empty restaurant, all the other people in the restaurant were behind me, so it wasn’t empty at all.

We ordered the usual Czech fare which meats a lot of meat based dishes, not that I mind. I think this type of cuisine is very common in this part of the Europe, since I have seen this food in Germany, Austria and Poland. I suspect there would be other places nearby which share the same type of food. The food was okay, it wasn’t bad or anything. I don’t think it is hard to mess up food like this anyway. I can’t really complain about it for the price. Besides, like the ambience the tavern has.

What is rather unique in Czech is the drink. Apart from the beer, which is Czechia is quite known for, there is what is described as herbal bitters. The brand name Becherovka is a branch of this type of liquor and it is beloved throughout the country. One of my friends loved this stuff. I don’t like liquor that much but I do try something new whenever I get a chance. It is herbal alright and but I don’t think it is something I would want to have regularly. My friend would end up getting this every single meal we have.
