Porte de la Craffe

Porte de la Craffe

Porte de la Craffe

At the end of what appeared to be the main street of the old town was an impressive looking gate. This gate is the last surviving gate of what used to be the fortifications of the old town of Nancy. This one is in remarkably good condition. Of course, it has already undergone several renovations and improvements. The structure is very imposing with the building supported by two towers with the conical roofs. As you can see, the towers have several windows to allow defenders to shoot. The Porte de la Craffe, marks one of the old boundaries of the old town.

Passing Through the Porte de la Craffe

Passing Through the Porte de la Craffe

The gate itself has the prominent cross of Lorraine carved onto it. While the gate itself below allows for people to pass through. It looks like vehicles used to be able to pass under the gate but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. The gate itself has been turned into a museum, which, of course, was closed. Passing through the gate didn’t sound very appealing to me since I imagined that it would be dark, wet and dirty, but this wasn’t the case. People actually use the gate to get in and out of the old town quarter so the gate has lights under it. It wasn’t even just any light but there was a basic chandelier here just to make sure that it is presentable.
