Taking the Ferry from Burtonport to Aranmore Island

Sailing the Ship to Aranmore Island

It isn’t my first time taking a ferry in Ireland. I have taken a boat here in the country but that was more on a visit to Tory Island. It wasn’t a ship that was capable of ferrying vehicles as this one is. The ride is supposed to a short one since Aranmore Island isn’t that far away. Before we left port, I managed to have a look at the bridge where everything happens. It wasn’t that fancy actually. It was just a small room which has a real helm. I can’t recall if I have ever seen one of these things on a real ship. I always thought that these belonged to older boats. It is a surprise to see in use.

There there are a few levers to control here no doubt one of them is the one which controls the power of the engine. As expected, there are also several guages which tell the captain the heath of the ship. The captain was quite friendly and allowed me to take photos of the bridge. From the bridge, you can’t really see the front of the ship. It is almost like driving a car from the rear end of the vehicle. I guess it takes a lot of getting used to when controlling a ship this large, since it is difficult to gauge how large you are. Come to think of it, it is probably worse for massive container ships which ply the oceans.
