Painting on a Ceiling at the Palazzo Barbaran da Porto
Painting on a Ceiling at the Palazzo Barbaran da Porto

I was having a look at the exhibits at the Palladio Museum in the city of Vicenza. I wasn’t in the mood to be reading all these text about the works of Palladio. I am more of a visual person and I would prefer to just see and not read. Yes, I’m lazy. To my defense, I still have a few more places I need to visit after the museum, so I can’t take TOO much time reading up all these text in the museum. One might forget that the Palladio Museum itself is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Palazzo Barbaran da Porto was converted into the museum but much of the interiors of the palazzo has been restored.

It is hard to keep your eyes away from the details on the building itself. I know that this place is called a palazzo but it is hard to imagine that this was just a residence of a nobleman. I don’t know what counts for a palace anymore since this Montano Barbarano was “just” a nobleman but no king. Still, the interiors of the residence reflect the fact that this was the home of someone important. This was no Versailles but you would get the same idea since the rooms are richly decorated. I think it is just amazing that people can afford to build things like this back then. Then again, labor would have been much cheaper back then.
