Poisonous Plants Behind Cages in the Poison Garden in Blarney Castle

The Blarney Castle was what I came to expect when it comes to Irish Castles. They are usually large featureless buildings from the outside. The insides of these castles tend to vary. Some would try to keep the castle the way it was, meaning devoid of any restorations, basically in a ruined state. Some would restore the castle and furnish it to how it may have looked like back then. I have seen both, and of course, it would be nice to see it in the original state, it does because rather boring to see one dreary empty room after another. Blarney Castle is one of these largely unrestored castles, sure there is maintenance work going on but I believe that it more for safety than improvements. After all, you don’t want a brick to fall on you while you are on tour.

Beyond the castle, it seems there were some castle walls. They weren’t full walls anymore but what was important was what is inside the walls. There is probably the most unique garden I have ever seen. It is named the Poison Garden. I thought it was a strange name but it soon become apparent why. The plants here were all poisonous. I didn’t really know much of them but a few did stand out for me, cannabis and opium. I wasn’t sure they were poisonous. There were others that I don’t know, mandrake, wolfsbane and ricin. They sound like they would show up as items in a video game. You can tell that they are careful about these plants. They are kept inside black cages so tourists will have difficulty coming into contact with them.
