The River Port of Aquileia is one of the major reasons why Aquileia became one of the biggest and more important cities in the Roman empire. The port connected the city with the rest of the Mediterranean and also the Roman empire which led to its prosperity. Walking along the banks of the ancient river, visitors can see the remains of what used to be a very busy river port. There were warehouses here to store products as well as quays for the boats to use. I would have to say that it is very impressive that a place had these kinds of facilities almost two thousand years ago. Then again, it is hard to fire up my imagination because must of what is left here are the just the foundations of the former facilities.

I can see how important this place is since not every riverside town would have ports. This makes it even more impressive since this not a very common piece of infrastructure to see. A lot of the quays and ports are just stone foundations now. But just walking along the length of the area will give visitors and idea of how extensive these facilities are. I don’t know how much longer the river will last since the volume of the water is much smaller now. I might be mistaken, but the river appears to be silting over and I worry that over time the river would eventually fill up.
