I quickly finished my visit to the Basilica of Santa Anastasia in the city of Verona. The city has a lot of historical structures that one would need to pick and choose which ones to visit, especially if you only have a day to visit the place like me. I know I am doing the historic city a disservice by giving it only one day to explore the entire place. Unfortunately, I do not have the time or the money to stay here for long periods, so this will have to do. In my short visit here, I will try to see the “most important” places.

My next destination is another one which ties to the history of Verona. The Scaliger Tombs are obviously tombs. The Scaligers were a ruling family of Verona. The Della Scala or the Scaligeri, what you call members of the family, have a dedicated area outside the church of Santa Maria Antica. I thought it was strange that the tombs were outside since most noblemen would have wanted to have been buried inside the church. But here they are outside the church separated from the outside by an enclosure. It was strange to see something like this in what was a very busy part of the city of Verona. There is a fence which encloses the tombs and I thought that it was a recent structure but apparently not. If you look closely the pillars of the fence would have statues of saints, something no modern builder would have incorporated into the enclosure.
