I ended up visiting yet another church here in Italy. I don’t remember how many I have visited in this trip but it wasn’t a small number relatively speaking. The Basilica di Santa Anastasia is the most important church in the city of Verona and it is not too far from the old city center. The exterior of the basilica didn’t seem to be that special so I thought that this would be just another old church in Italy, but the interior looked much better. From my understanding the facade of the basilica was never finished, that is why it looks the way it is. The interior is a different matter though.

The Basilica di Santa Anastasia is classified as a gothic church. During this trip, I think I lost my idea of what a gothic church should look like. At least from my eyes, it doesn’t look much like a gothic church. There were parts which do such as the ceiling but perhaps this is the Veronese take on what a gothic church is. As usual the center of the church is the altar which is usually the most elaborate piece in the entire church. This is a chapel dedicated to Saint Peter of Verona, for whom the current church actually is dedicated to. On the left is the monument to Cortesia Serego, something like a general at the time of the construction of the church. To the right is a painting of the last judgement. It seems like every part of the church is a work of art.
