The Basilica of Santa Anastasia in Verona was a monument built to show the power and clout of the ruling family of Verona the Della Scala or the Scaligers. They worked with the Dominicans to build the current basilica, which looks impressive enough. This church was completed in the fifteenth century and it is dedicated to Saint Peter of Verona. However, just like us who tend to call a place what it was always called, the church was still called the name of its predecessor church Santa Anastasia. The church is gothic in style though it may not be that obvious from the outside. The design wasn’t very impressive but I think the inside of the church is a different matter.

For a gothic church, the Basilica of Santa Anastasia is quite bright. I guess just because you adhere to a specific style doesn’t mean you cannot take liberties with it. The church has a very high ceiling as gothic churches tend to have. The pillars which support the church are quite prominent especially since they appear to be clad in marble. Although you would think that the basilica would naturally be large, I was surprised to see how large it actually was inside. I guess it is because it is much brighter that you can see just how far the other end is. For a church this size, there would definitely be several chapels around it. Time to have a look.
