The Lago di Landro is one of the major stops in my whirlwind tour of the Dolomites. As the name implies is a lake nestled within the mountains. There is a road which goes right by the lake, so it is are worthwhile stop. I have seen photos of how these alpine lakes have this beautiful turquoise blue color but when I got there, it was nothing but white. Of course it was December, but I didn’t expect everything to already be white. As you can see from the photos, the lake frozen over with more snow on top of the frozen surface. There was so much snow that it was difficult to tell where the shore was since everything was all white.

I thought about trying to walk on the lake but there wasn’t anyone here and I won’t know how safe it would be to walk on it. I have never been to a frozen lake before, so I don’t really know how it behaves. Is the snow just floating on the surface and everything else is still liquid? Or did the surface already freeze before the snow accumulated like that. If so, how thick is the ice and will be be able support someone walking on top of it. How do I even know if it is? In short, I just stayed at a safe distance from the shore just to make sure that I don’t end up under the ice. If I do, then that will be the end of this blog and my two readers will not want that.
