Inside the Cathedral of Palmanova
Inside the Cathedral of Palmanova

I know that the city of Palmanova is a UNESCO World Heritage site but it felt a little underwhelming to visit since most of what was interesting is outside of the city, specifically the walls. In fact, it would be best to see the city from above it, not within it. I know that there is an architectural trail one can follow here but I wasn’t interested in it. The square itself wasn’t very interesting either. Apart from its shape – hexagonal, there wasn’t much to see here since it was almost empty. The main structure of interest here is the Cathedral of Palmanova or officially the Dogal Cathedral of the Holy Redeemer, which was built in the 1700s. I think that before I decide to go for dinner, I needed to have a look inside the cathedral.

The cathedral is not as large as how it looks like from the outside. The lights were already turned down but one can still have a look around since there weren’t any ongoing services. One can see the Romanesque style of the cathedral here, particularly in the altar area, which unlike the rest of the cathedral is richly decorated with frescoes. I thought it was a bit strange to have only the altar area have frescoes when the church is usually covered in them. There were still a few people looking around here to my surprise. Maybe there is something interesting in here after all.
