Palmanova Cathedral
Palmanova Cathedral

I spent most of the afternoon walking around the city of Palmanova in Northern Italy. It didn’t take too long and just as the sun was starting to set, I went in and ended up in the Piazza Grande which is the main city plaza. I visited Palmanova in December and I thought the there would be a Christmas market here since the plaza is quite large but it was largely empty. This is my first time visiting Italy in December and I don’t know if Christmas markets are a thing here. Perhaps it really isn’t that common. Anyway, before it gets totally dark, I walked around the square to see the structures here. Perhaps, none would be more prominent here than the Cathedral of Palmanova.

Like any other self respecting city or town in Italy, Palmanova has its own cathedral. The official name of the church is the Dogal Cathedral of the Holy Redeemer or Duomo del Santissimo Redentore. It was built in the 1700s in typical Venetian style. The “dogal” part in the name refers to the a government official of Venice. Curiously, the bell tower isn’t as tall compared to what the main cathedral building would like you to believe. Apparently, this was intentional since they can’t have the bell tower too high for fear that it would be open to attack. I guess that makes sense. Looking around the area, there isn’t much activity going on here. I’m not sure how many tourists make it here especially in the winter. Then again, this is my preferred time of vacation so I would just have to deal with it.
