Inside the Gates of Palmanova
Inside Porta Aquileia in Palmanova

Although I have already visited all three main gates of the city of Palmanova. I thought that I should continue on to where I started to complete my walk around the entire city. It was my first time to literally walk around an entire city, albeit a small one. The Porta Aquileia is the gate where I started my walk and after some time I was finally back there. This is the gate that faces the city of Aquileia which I visited earlier in the day. I was glad that they are so close to each other that it was easy to visit both of them in a single day, especially if you have I car which I did.

It was time for me to actually go in the fortified city. I already went in to park the car but head back out to see the walls of Palmanova. As you might expect, the gates are the main access points into the city. The actual portal is wide enough for one lane of traffic to go through, so there is a stop and go system here. The inside of the gate gives you an idea of how thick the walls are. I was surprised to see that there are actually two layers of gates here. The first one is the one which can be seen from the outside, while the second one is the one which can be seen from the inside of the city. There is some space in between these to gates which form an enclosure which is surrounded by some arches. There are some inscriptions above the arches inside the gates which I assume indicate the dates when it was built. It was too far away to see what it was but I probably won’t be able to understand them anyway. The top floor of the gate is lined with modern glass windows. I’m not sure what they were supposed to be but they looked a little out of place.
