The Roman Forum of Aquileia is a bit outside the modern city center. I had to walk out to the main road to get there. From the Roman Forum, there is one more place to go to and I will be taking the scenic route to get there. There is a way behind the Roman forum but I decided to go by the main road, if only to scout out a place to have lunch after this. Like a lot of major cities in the world. There is usually a river associated with them. In the case of Aquileia, it has the Natisone and Torre rivers. The rivers connected Aquileia to the sea which enabled trade with the city.

These days, the water volume of the river has significantly gone down and one would struggle to imagine that there was a major trading hub here. However, it is also because of this river that Aquileia became as important as it did back then. If there was no trade, there won’t be growth in the city and there won’t be any ruins to be visited by tourists two thousand years later. The port of Aquileia is a major point of interest here as it showcases the infrastructure that was here that enabled the city’s prosperity. I just hope that there is still much to see here a thousand years after its heydey.
