Thin Ribbon of Sandstone is Landscape Arch in Arches National Park

The Devil’s Garden is the final stop in the driving route of Arches National Park. The parking area of the Devil’s Garden is bigger than normal, which tells me that there is more to see here apart from this “garden”. There is a trail here which visitors can follow but what is important to know here is that the trail can also lead further out in to the rougher parts of the park. There will be signs to warn visitors of the increase in difficulty of the trail so visitors won’t have to worry about suddenly needing to know how to rock climb.

The trail was easy enough to follow but at the end of the trail is one of the more important arches in the park. Landscape Arch is considered to be the longest arch in North America. For something so long, it took me some time to find it since it tends to blend in with all the sandstone you see here. I only saw it when I saw the hole the arch made. The main arch itself is much thinner than the other arches that I have seen here. This is another example of how these structures, no matter how they may appear, are not static. Large portions of the arch fell which left this thin ribbon of rock we see today. At its narrowest, it is six feet wide. It is sad to think that one day, this magnificent arch would also collapse.

There is a prominent viewing area below the Landscape Arch. This is also where you would see signs warning hikers that the trail would get more difficult from that point on. There are a number of arches to see beyond this point: Navajo Arch, Double O Arch and Partition Arch. These are all well beyond my pay grade and I will not proceed any further. The more adventurous among you might be able to do this but be warned that the trail is close to non-existent and there will be a lot of scrambling over rocks.
