Sand Dune Arch at Arches National Park
Sand Dune Arch at Arches National Park

The Sand Dune Arch is my latest stop in my drive through the park. I can tell that this stop would be a little different since the short hike brings me inside a collection of sandstone fins. The structure is unique alright but somewhere here is yet another natural sandstone arch. After a short walk inside the the fins, I found myself walking on sand. I know that this part of Utah is very dry and it is not surprising to have sand but for the most part I haven’t walked on full blown sand yet. Inside the fins, the sand has accumulated over the years and has formed a modest sand dune.

I can’t tell how deep the sand is but it certainly wasn’t anything like walking on rock. The interior of the fins isn’t very spacious nor was it claustrophobic. There weren’t too many people here so I pretty much had the place all to myself. Off to the right, you can see the said Sand Dune Arch. It wasn’t very tall, at least compared to the other arches that I have seen, and this is by far the shortest of the ones I have visited. I marveled at the thought of this forming in seemingly in the middle of nowhere but then again, it really depends on the material the rock here, if the material in the center can erode faster than the ones above, then there is a good chance that there would be an arch forming here. It is also nice that someone managed to find this that it ended up on the main tourist driving route.
