The Fiery Furnace is an exposed sandstone formation in Arches National Park with brilliant colors and the formation looks like it could be an open fire where got it its name from. Since the rock is all exposed, you can also see the layers of rock that were deposited here over the millennia. It is hard to imagine how a material like rock and be twisted and turned like that. But one would need to remember that the material wasn’t all solid like it is right now. Over the years, sediment would settle to the bottom of the sea and then it would get covered by other stuff and other stuff. Over the years, it would get twisted, rolled, compressed and then turned into stone that we can see now.

I realize that sometimes it is hard to visualize how a desert can be beautiful but maybe it is because I can only see this kind of place once in a while. However, looking at this scenery right in front of me, it makes me think that this is just some video game. There is a desert in front of me, then forest behind that and far away there are snow capped mountains which I believe are the La Sal Mountains. It isn’t unlike some video games that I have played recently. I think you need to come at the right time to be able to see something like this as well, so I count myself lucky to be able to afford to come to see this place at the right time.
