Black Birch Canyon at Bryce Canyon National Park
Black Birch Canyon at Bryce Canyon National Park

On my way up to Rainbow Point in Bryce Canyon National Park, I saw several pullouts which have viewing areas. Unfortunately, they were all on the wrong side of the road and I didn’t want to have to deal with crossing over to the side, even if there was hardly any traffic here. I decided to visit them on the way back down, where this time they will be on the right side of the road. Black Birch Canyon is one of these stops and compared to the last stop, there seems to be more than just a parking lot. It seems that there is proper viewing area here.

Black Birch Canyon is a narrow area between sandstone formations here in the park. The slopes here are very steep, producing the canyon we see now. Like some of the places here in Bryce Canyon National Park, Black Birch Canyon is also a misnomer. The black birch in the name refers to a type of tree but that tree doesn’t grow here. The actual tree that grows here called quaking aspen was mistaken for black birch and the place was named after it. Unfortunately, I don’t think you can correct these types of things. Parts of the canyon is shared with Rainbow Point though I can’t really tell where is Rainbow point from here.
