Even though I arrived mid-afternoon at Zion National Park, I still managed to squeeze in some time to do a short little hike. The Watchman’s Trail is considered an easy trail with a length of less than three miles round trip. It sounds easy enough but just keep in mind that trail is uphill all the way. The slope is gentle enough that sometimes you won’t even notice the elevation gain if it weren’t for that ever higher cliffs along the way. I was hoping to get a bit more sun but it seems that the sun is a little too low now for good lighting. Keep in mind that Zion and this general area itself is quite high up so I thought I would get a bit more daylight but there are too many mountains in the way ultimately blocking the setting sun.
I kept looking at the mountains behind thinking that they don’t seem to be any closer than when I started. I was under the impression that the trail would be bring hikers to the peak but this wasn’t the case. Eventually, there was a clearing with a sign proclaiming that this was the Watchman’s Overlook. The Watchman’s Trail ends here at the overlook. For people who have equipment they can continue on to the top but the trail is much less traveled and maintained. I suppose that if you have the equipment then you would be able to handle climbing up mountains unlike mere mortals like me.
