Going Down Avondale Forest Park Viewing Tower

The Avondale Forest Park Viewing Tower is certainly one of the more unique places that I have visited. It is a literal tower in the middle of a forest, which I thought to be a little out of place. The tower is meant to blend in with nature but I don’t think it is doing a very good job of it. The tower is primarily made of wood harvested from this very forest. So supposedly the carbon footprint isn’t that large. Anyway, the main point of going here is walking to the very top and admiring the view above the Avondale Forest Park. However, that isn’t the only thing you can do here.

For a fee, you can go back down in a fraction of the time it is to climb up the tower and I don’t mean jumping down, but that would be close. There is a slide built around the structure and the entrance is at the top. For two euros, you can slide your way around and down to the bottom of the tower. At the bottom of the tower, you are given something like a sack where you slip yourself into and slide down. It is meant to provide some protection from burns as well as providing a little more slip to the sliding.

I thought it was hilarious that you have to carry the mat all the to the top while contemplating whether you should go through with it or not. Some of us took the chance to back out and walk back down. I’m not a big fan of rides and but I had to be a model for the kids and I went down first. I wasn’t terrifying or even that fast I just thought it was a shame that I couldn’t use my camera there. The slide is very safe and the entire length it enclosed so people won’t accidentally throw themselves out of the slide. It was fun but there is no easy way to get back to the top apart from making the climb back up.
