Doe Castle

Doe Castle

I was glad to know that Ireland has no shortage of castles that are still intact. In fact, county Donegal has a surprising number of castles some of which I didn’t even expect. When I think about it, the English did set up quite a few of the castles, Donegal is no exception. One of the castles which are nearby is Doe Castle. It is small castle built right on the shores of an inlet which regularly floods when the tide comes in. I know it is nice to have a castle by the water but I am not too sure of the stability of the land here. The castle has already stood for a few hundred years so I think it should be stable enough.

Try to Spot Doe Castle

I have visited this castle previously and I found it mostly intact. It is not possible to go in the castle so all I can do is to admire it from the outside. This castle is best known for its version of Romeo and Juliet. These days it is nice castle to see right by the water. Across the water, there is a viewing point where you can appreciate the castle from afar. I have been to that point before and I was disappointed to see how small the castle looks from the viewpoint. The next time I stopped there, made sure I had my camera with me and of course my telephoto lens. Now I can see it better, I know it still small but it is much better than before. As you can see, the water level is quite low, so it is not as picturesque.
