I had a great two days spent at Achill Island. I even managed to go out and visit the nearby Belmullet Peninsula. This part of the country isn’t that touristed which makes it feel even more remote than it already is. I like visiting places like these. It is not as if I have to go out of my way and get into all sorts of trouble just to come here. The roads here are good and it is easy to find. Facilities may not be as many as other more well known places but I think that is part of the charm of visiting places like these. Achill Island is one of the hidden gems of Ireland, perhaps it is exactly the difficulty to getting here which makes it more charming.

I finally checked out of The Strand Hotel at Dugort. I plan to head back that day but I want to be able to see other places along the way. I originally used the main highway to get to Achill Island but that kind of bypassed a few interesting places, so I thought I should drop by a few of them. One of these places is Mulranny. I actually passed by this village earlier and remember seeing a huge sandy beach. I made a note to pass by here on my way back. Before that I went by the southern route to go to Mulranny. There was a stop which explained that the water have the sunken remains of a Spanish Armada. This part of Ireland seemed to be strategic which makes it a prime target for invasion but they were repelled and sunk. Obviously, there was no way to see them now unless you dive. This was an interesting stopover on the way to Mulranny.
