Restaurant La Grange de Saint Jean

Liver Cake in Tomato Sauce

Liver Cake in Tomato Sauce

I have been searching for a type of restaurant which is supposedly famous in Lyon. This is the bouchon. This type of restaurant usually have shared tables and you supposedly get a fun and friendly atmosphere here. I have seen some of the more well known ones but they were fully booked, I then spent time walking up and down Vieux Lyon looking for some of these places. There were signs on restaurants proclaiming that they are bouchon but in reality there are only a handful of these official bouchon and none of them I can enter. There was one restaurant which had the word “bouchon” outside their shop and I knew this was just a lure for tourist but I bit anyway.

If this place was a bouchon, then I probably got the idea all wrong. This place doesn’t look any different from a normal restaurant. It had a nice ambience but the fact that this place wasn’t full probably says a lot. Restaurant La Grange de Saint Jean is a shop not far from the river. Fortunately, there was English in the menu. I think I have been seeing too much French these days, that I start to understand what is on the menu. I went for liver cake as an appetizer. This was as strange as it sounded but it wasn’t that bad. There was tomato sauce on it to lessen the strong liver taste.

I then had sirloin with shallots for my mains. This one didn’t look like a steak at all. Perhaps it wasn’t meant to be. It wasn’t as tender as I wanted it to be and I thought that the French prefer to have their meat bloody. For dessert I had some cake, I wasn’t sure what it is, but it was still okay. The food wasn’t that great, but it wasn’t that bad either. I came here looking for some region cuisine and I think I got it in the liver cake. This would be my last meal in Lyon since I would be moving on from here. It is a pity that I didn’t get to try the other dishes Lyon is famous for. Perhaps that would be a reason for me to come back here.
