Sigismund’s Column at the Castle Square in Warsaw

Upon first approach to the Old Town of Warsaw, one would undoubtedly see the impressive castle square. This is obviously named because there is a square right in front of the royal castle. Unfortunately, the castle itself seems to be under renovation, I will be back here after a few days perhaps there is a chance they might be done. For now, I will just content myself taking photos of the pretty square. The buildings around the square have different colors which add to the color of the photo. Unfortunately, the gloomy weather here made the lighting quite bad.

There is a prominent column here with a statue on top. This is called Sigismund’s Column. Sigismund here refers to King Sigismund III who moved the capital from Krakow to Warsaw. At the time Poland was a formidable power and Sigismund III was leader of the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth. He also held the title of King of Sweden. Confused yet? It is said that this reign marked the start of the decline of power of Poland, even leading to loss of territory. Still, his son erected a column in his honor back in 1644. In World War II, the column was destroyed and the statue damaged. It was subsequently restored to its state now.
