The Palazzo Maffei is one of the heritage structures around the Piazza delle Erbe in the city of Verona. It is a baroque building that stands on the western end of the very busy square. I got annoyed by the presence of numerous stalls in the market square since there were blocking my view of the surrounding buildings. I think the only one which wasn’t that obstructed was the Palazzo Maffei so I ended up here. There is a museum here in the palazzo and I thought that I might as well have a look. The museum is basically a collection of art collected over the years. The collection has a rather wide range and while I’m not one to judge the quality of the collection, I thought it was rather well presented.

As you might expect, the palazzo itself was a palace and it looks the part. The palace itself was very well preserved. A lot of the collection here in the museum are from local painters over the years. However, they didn’t limit themselves to that. I was surprised to see a rather familiar looking painting which is definitely not Veronese. In fact, it was Japanese. The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai is a famous painting that people might recognize. I didn’t know that it was housed here and I thought it was strange to see it here. I had to look it up but I learned that the painting had several prints and Palazzo Maffei museum was able to acquire one of them.
