While we weren’t terribly impressed with the Church of Saint Barbara at Kutná Hora, I still think it is a nice enough church. While it is considered to be one of the great examples of gothic churches, I can’t help but think that there are several other churches that would be more impressive that this one. Maybe it doesn’t help that it isn’t as large as I thought it would be. Maybe it doesn’t help that it was rather bright inside considering that most gothic churches that I have seen tend to be rather dark inside. Either way, we continued on our visit.

We found out that it is possible to go up to the second floor of the church. It is not exactly a rooftop but it was high enough above to see almost everything. This area is still inside the church. I normally associate the second floor of a church with a choir but maybe that it just something I grew familiar with. From here you can see the figures which adorn the walls of the church, in particular the rear. There are figures of angels which are covered in gold. I was then surprised to see that these figures were hollow and some of them didn’t even have a full figure but flat. I concede that not everyone gets to go here and thus will never see behind the figures on display here but it was surprisingly practical of them not to complete the figure since no one would normally see them.
