Mathildenhöhe isn’t the only place to see here in Darmstadt. I finished visiting the artists’ colony and I decided to have a look around the rest of the city. Apparently, Waldspirale is another major landmark which Darmstadt is known for. I only knew about it when I saw postcards of it and found out that it was also in Darmstadt. It is a bit of a walk away from the city center but I guess it was okay. I was sticking to the main streets and weaving my way to Waldspirale. I realized that it was difficult to photograph it because I couldn’t find any good vantage point. I was at ground level and it doesn’t look that impressive.

Waldspirale is an apartment complex that has a rather unique design. As the name implies the design has a spiral one which goes all around the building. The apartment building is topped by several onion domes. The Waldspirale was designed by architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser who seems to have something against straight lines. Apparently, the windows are all unique. It would have been a pain to find replacements for them in case they broke. I didn’t get to go in the apartment complex but a few of the apartments were even designed individually. One could imagine that it won’t be cheap to have all rooms of an apartment building designed individually, so it wasn’t. From the outside you can see that it is a living and breathing apartment. It was built in the 1990 so it is showing a bit of its age. Maybe a fresh coat of paint would help.
