Walking Along the Rhine

I had no idea that a major river such as the Rhine would have a beautiful landscape. I was of the impression that the Rhine would be so well developed that there won’t be any place for natural scenery. But I was wrong. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is known to be one of the most beautiful sections of the river. The river cuts a gorge through the landscape and forms a very picturesque area which tourists from all over the world and even across the centuries would come to appreciate. You don’t have to believe me, you can see how there are pretty little towns that are built along the riverbanks.

It is not just small towns that are built here but there are also castles. There are actually around forty castles along the Rhine. The reasons for building the castle could be all different. One of the primary reasons would be just to take advantage of the natural beauty of the Rhine. However, it can also be for defensive purposes since the river is essentially another way enemies can penetrate defenses, it would be to set up a castle or a fort where people can keep an eye out for unwanted visitors. Already here in Sankt Goar, I can see at least three castles. Two are actually within easy reach from the town while the other is further downstream.
