Close Look at Augustusburg Palace

The sun was going down and I was already at the Augustusburg Palace. The temperature was just above freezing but it doesn’t make any more comfortable for me. At least I still have a bit of light to photograph the Augustusburg Palace. This palace is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site list. It was built by Clemens Augustus who was Archbishop of Köln and also an elector. Obviously, someone who is part of a group who is able to elect the next emperor of the Holy Roman Empire is a very important person. Unfortunately, he used his position to build structures like the Augustusburg Palace and his nearby Falkenlust Hunting Lodge.

Between the two, the Augustusburg Palace is by far the larger of the structures. It does look the part of a palace. It is U shaped with the to ends of the U pointing towards the entrance. Going through the middle would make you feel like you are being swallowed by the building. But that is something that I didn’t get to experience since the palace was closed, possibly for the season. The same thing happened to me at Falkenlust and I didn’t get a chance to go in this magnificent structure. From the looks of it, the building certainly deserves the name of “palace”. There actually used to be an old castle here but it was built over by Clemens Augustus, probably to show how much better he is. More recently, the palace was used to host events by the German president when nearby Bonn, was still the capital of Germany.
