Inside Köln Cathedral

Köln Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage listed cathedral in the city of Köln or Cologne in Germany. I was very impressed with the size of the cathedral, clearly dominating the skyline of the city. As you might expect, Köln Cathedral is the most important landmark in the city. Construction first started in the thirteenth century and it was only completed in the nineteenth century. Even though they took their time, they still ended up with a masterpiece of a building. It is hard to imagine that something you designed can only be completed centuries later.

The inside of the Köln Cathedral reflects the size of the structure outside. The ceiling is very high and the walls are topped with stained glass windows. I would have wanted to see more of the cathedral but it seems there are services going on at the time. It was a Sunday when I arrived and I wasn’t surprised to see that there is Sunday Mass going on. Tourists are not allowed to roam around when there is Mass going on. There are bouncers, for a lack of a better term, who make sure to keep the tourists out. I think it is a very hard job because they would need to figure out who really are not tourists, because everyone seems to have a reason to give when asked why they wanted to go in. Ultimately, I wasn’t able to go beyond the entrance. I would have been too dubious to try to claim that I was there to attend Mass since, the Mass is in German and I can’t speak or understand German.
