Eclectic Mix of Colors at the Fremont Street Experience

I was excited to find out that the Fremont Street Experience is directly across the hotel where I was staying in. Fremont Street is one of the famous faces of Las Vegas, the other being The Strip. There is a large concentration of hotel casinos here that it would feature a lot in media depicting Las Vegas with all the bright lights. What I saw here somehow isn’t how I imagined it to be. There is a large canopy which covers the length of the street. What’s more, the canopy shows projected images. I don’t remember seeing any of this in media showing Las Vegas.

The canopy was completed in 1995 and at the time, they were using incandescent bulbs. To be able to show images thy would have multiple bulbs in one pixel. If this sounds a lot like making a screen, then it certainly is. The pixel would have four colors and the entire colossal screen would be able to show what ever image is programmed to it. It is really an amazing piece of engineering. As you might imagine, maintaining such a thing is very difficult because back then, incandescent bulbs tend to burn out. In 2004, it was finally upgraded to use LED bulbs. Then most recently, it was upgraded with a boost in resolution as well as brightness so that it can even be used in the day time.
