Paul Revere’s House

I probably sound like a broken record for saying how much of a historical city Boston is. Granted that even Boston isn’t anywhere near as old as Rome or even Paris, there is still a lot of history to be had here in the city. I was walking around what is dubbed Little Italy because of the large population of people of Italian descent in this part of the city. I wasn’t here for Little Italy itself but there is a very significant structure here in the middle of this district.

Boston is forever tightly intertwined with the American Revolution. There were several events which eventually led to America gaining her independence from the British. Paul Revere is one of the more prominent figures in this early stage of the struggle for independence. Although he was a silversmith by trade, he was very active politically. He is most known for his midnight ride to Portsmouth, New Hampshire because there were rumors of the British soldiers landing there. The news of the landing turned out to be not true but this inspired the locals to raid the nearby Fort William and Mary for its gunpowder.

Four months later, there was news of a plan by the British to possibly stop at Lexington or Concord. Again, Paul Revere set out to warn the locals of the approach. This alert helped the militia fend off the British and it is widely considered as one of the major events leading to the revolution. It is however worthwhile to note that Paul Revere never actually made it to the destination, he was captured before he made it there but was released after questioning. Still, the ride already did its job and that is to warn the people of the coming troops.
