Timber Framed Buildings at Colmar

Narrow Half Timbered Building in Colmar

I managed to go to the beautiful city of Colmar in the Alsace region. This city if known for its medieval buildings and I was eager to see them. I find these types of buildings very attractive and to know that there is a large part of the city that looks like this makes me excited. I don’t know how much of these buildings were original but a lot of the buildings here have the timber frames which medieval buildings are known for. As the name implies, timber is used to build the frame or structure of the building. What happens afterwards is up to the builder but the rest of the building is built using more sturdy material like concrete. After all, a wooden building probably won’t last that long.

You can see from these buildings that the timber can still be seen from the outside, these are referred to as half timbered buildings. These exposed timber can be used as designs and each region would have their own distinct designs. It is easy to see why these buildings are so attractive. Here in Colmar, much of the building is left as it is but the ground level one is usually a store front like a restaurant or a some shop. When I visited in December, some of the buildings are also decorated adding more style to an already elegant building. I didn’t see any signs indicating that one building is significant. To me, just looking the way they are already makes them significant in my books.
