Glass Shell Outside the Old Gare de Strasbourg Building

I arrived in the city of Strasbourg in a very good time. Strasbourg is a city on the eastern side of France and it is also the last stop of this TGV line so there was no missing this stop for me. When I got off the train, I immediately noticed that it was actually a lovely day, the sun was out and the sky was clear, I took this as a good sign, so I’m hoping that the weather holds for the next few days that I am here. The Gare de Strasbourg is my first introduction to this city and I was impressed at how large it was. The main station building has been remarkably preserved and maintained. But what I noticed was that there was much more than the old structure of the Gare de Strasbourg.

When I got out of the station building, I noticed that there was a glass shell outside the building. Apparently, not too long ago, they decided to encase the entire train station in a glass dome. The escalators that are outside the main station building are now sheltered from the elements because of this dome. It is a very attractive addition to the old train station and I think it is a great example of modernizing the station and at the same time keeping the station the way it is. The dome also has the effect of enlarging the station itself because instead of having ticket kiosks inside the main station building, you can now put them outside the building and yet keep the passengers protected from the weather. The dome is so large than I had to walk back quite a bit to get the entirety of the dome in the photo.
