Bantry Harbor

I head to Bantry Harbor in the hopes that I would be able to find a place to eat for dinner. It was still late afternoon, so I still have time to have a look around first. Bantry seems to be a pretty little town. It has a nice harbor here much like a lot of coastal towns in Cork. There is a nice little coastal walk you can do here which takes you along the harbor road and you can get to see the town and the harbor. The path here is very well made and it is safe even if it is right beside the main highway getting into town.

A pretty little harbor town like Bantry always has a story behind it. In this case, it dates back from when the English still ruled the area. Theobald Wolf Tone was trying to organize a rebellion with the help of the French. The French were supposed to sail into Bantry to support the locals but the French encountered bad weather and got separated from each other. An English supporter caught wind of these efforts and alerted the English who managed to prepare for the invasion. The invasion eventually fizzled out, that English supporter was then rewarded and he became the Earl of Bantry. The local Bantry House was their residence and it still stands to this day. I can’t imagine how history would have turned out had this rebellion been successful.
