After checking in with the bed and breakfast, I decided to make use of the remaining daylight to go to the Old Head of Kinsale. My host didn’t seems to be that excited when I said I would be visiting it. Apparently, I would find out the reason for that soon enough. However, she did mention that there is a memorial park here which is worth a visit. The park is the Lusitania Museum. So what exactly is the Lusitania? The Lusitania or Royal Mail Ship Lusitania is a ship. At that time, the Germans also have ships that cross the ocean and the Lusitania was meant to counter that. There were also plans to make the ship available for use in case of war. Ten years after the ship was built, the first world war broke out.

At the time, Britain was engaged in war with Germany. Although, the Lusitania was never used for war, it needed to make a trip to Liverpool from New York. Not far the Old Head of Kinsale, the ship was torpedoed by the Germans. This was a common tactic by the Germans to starve supply lines. Unfortunately, there were almost two thousand passengers on board. More than half of that perished. The sinking of the Lusitania could be considered as one of the turning points of the war. At that time, the United States was still neutral, however, after the sinking of the Luistania, that pushed the United States on the road to join that war against Germany.
