Eating at the Rabat Market

Deep Fried Seafood at the Rabat Medina Market

I arrived at Dar Tsouli in Rabat where I would stay for a night. The dar is quite convenient as it is in the medina and quite accessible to the other spots. I have been to Rabat a previous day as I was making my way to Tangier. I was hoping I would be able to get there early so I can go around but I arrived very late at night and I wasn’t able to do much apart from sleep. This time, I would have more time to see the sights of Rabat. I arrived close to noon time and it was already time for lunch. I thought that I should just go eat first before I do anything else.

The Dar Tsouli has a restaurant next door so I know that I have an option there. However, I decided to go have a look around first. Turns out that there is a market nearby and there was food being cooked there. The specialty here seems to be deep fried seafood. Rabat is a coastal city so it is not surprising to see a lot of seafood here. I was having second thoughts on eating at the market but I just did it anyway. The seafood is displayed out in front of the stall with a large cooking vat. The seafood is smothered in flour and then deep fried. This is not fish and chips though. You need to be comfortable eating with your hands. The fish have bones so you cannot avoid using your hands. I went for a mix seafood plate which was actually more than I expected. I took my sweet time eating the seafood half expecting that I would get a stomach ache after this. Fortunately, everything seemed to be okay. The seafood meal turned out to be one of the cheapest meals I had in my entire trip to Morocco. If you are not particularly picky out where you eat your food, you might want to give this a try. Just head to the market and you would find several stalls serving seafood.
