Very Dense Medina of Fès

Very Dense Medina of Fès

The site of the Marinid Tombs has immense historical significance. It is the where the rulers of the Marinid dynasty were buried. These days only two mausoleums remain and both are in a poor state of decay. While there are still remaining signs of its former splendor, you would have to look hard to notice them. These days, the Marinid Tombs are more popular because of it is a great spot for viewing the medina of Fès. The medina unfurls below you and it is so vast that you would be hard pressed to see any detail here. The medina is so dense that only the largest structures can be seen.

Just coming from the medina myself, I am not surprised to see how dense it actually is. But seeing it in its entirety just gives you an idea of how large and dense this place actually is. Fortunately, I have a telephoto lens with me and I and able to zoom to take a closer look. Only then can I tease out some detail in the medina. It is interesting to see centuries old medina would have so many satellite dishes on its rooftops. The medina probably hasn’t changed much but you can see the impact the modern age has on it.
