Thoughts on Hidden Lake at Glacier National Park

Hidden Lake Overlook at Glacier National Park

I was quite surprised to be hiking when I got to Logan Pass. I was probably taken in by the stunning scenery around and that there was a sign pointing me to Hidden Lake. It seemed not that far from the car park that I thought I should just go for it. I wasn’t in any shape to be doing any hiking but I guess it was a good warm up for me since I would be doing a few of them here in the park. I have been reviewing some of the hikes online and this was marked as one of the easier ones. Unfortunately, I didn’t expect that much of an elevation gain so I was left huffing and puffing and wondering if it was the altitude or my lack of conditioning. Long story short, I managed to make it to Hidden Lake and it is indeed a splendid view.

The lake sits at the bottom of a valley between the mountains and can be truly described as hidden. Unfortunately, the lighting conditions are less than ideal. The sun was somewhat behind the mountains and Bearhat mountain became one large black mass in the photo. The lake itself wasn’t illuminated well enough to give the famous blue color. There is still a trail which lets you go all the way to the lake itself but that is another hour of hiking which I wasn’t willing to do. I was hoping for the the sun to illuminate the side of Bearhat Mountain which is facing us but that wasn’t meant to be. It could be because I arrived here midday that the sun would already be past the point where it can illuminate the lake. If only Logan Pass was open all the way that I didn’t have to spend more than two hours to go around Glacier National Park. Perhaps in the future if I am given the chance, I would go there first thing in the morning. For sure the pictures would be much better.
