Erris Head

When I was researching on what to see in the Belmullet Peninsula. One of the places which consistently popped up was Erris Head Loop. I am quite familiar with these kinds of places. These are typically hiking trails which bring you to magnificent scenery. However, I didn’t think I was keen on hiking that day. But it turned out that I finished my exploration of Belmullet Peninsula early so I actually have a bit to time to spare before I head back to Achill Island. Erris Head is at the northernmost point of the peninsula and it is quite remote. There is a carpark to leave you vehicle and you would travel on foot afterwards.

The trail passed through a pasture which seems to be private property. There were sheep grazing on the grass here and it is understandably fenced off. For humans to pass through, there is a set of stairs which they need to climb to get over the fence. The sheep never seem to notice this so I just kept on moving forward. The trail is actually a loop and it follows the coast for the most part. Even at the start of the trail, I can already see the cliffs which Erris Head is known for. The trail continues on the dirt path some of which is soft be careful of your footing. It would be nice to come here when the ground is dry but I think the doesn’t happen very often. I didn’t end up trekking the whole loop since it might take a lot mof time. It was just me on the trail and I didn’t want to get caught out there when night falls. I was sure there is still stuff to see here but I had to retrace my steps to make sure I get back to the car park. The trail isn’t strenuous at all and I think it would be perfect if I had the whole day to do it.
