Exploring Azenhas do Mar

Azenhas do Mar was a surprising place our tour guide brought us to. I was under the impression that Sintra was on top of a hill. That is probably true but Sintra is actually quite large. Sintra is actually part of the national park Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais. This is turns out to be a rather large park not too far away from Lisbon. Sintra hill is actually just one of these places encompassed by the park. As it turns out, the park actually reaches all the way to the Atlantic coast. I only realized this when our tour guide brought us to Azenhas do Mar, which is a town built on the cliff tops facing the Atlantic.

I did know that there was cliff scenery to be seen here but I guess it is to be expected since this is the Atlantic ocean. Ireland has similar cliff side scenery but the rocks here appear to have a different color to them. I went down to the bottom of the cliff through a long series of stairs. There is a small beach here with a resort. They have beach chairs here and it seemed to be very nice to lay here and watch the sea. Just beyond the beach chairs was a pool of dirty water. I wasn’t really sure what that was but I would have thought it would have been for swimming but the water is all green and murky, definitely not for swimming. The beach, on the other hand, was okay it is not everyday you get to touch the ocean but it seems to be very accessible here. I thought this place would have been nice if it weren’t for that pool or murky water.
