Ferry to Aranmore Island

On a whim, I decided to visit Aranmore Island off the coast of county Donegal. I had to drive all the way to the village of Burtonport to catch a ferry to the island. I debated on bringing the car to the island but laziness won out in the end. In hindsight, I think it was a good call to bring the car. I won’t be as tired and I would be able to see more. As the name implies, Burtonport is a port and the main gateway to Aranmore Island. There are regular ferries which go to the island with or without vehicles.

I saw the ferries waiting by the pier. I was quite excited when it was my turn to board. It is actually challenging to board the ferry, first of all, you board the ferry in reverse. So you climb up the ferry backwards as you make your way inside the parking area in the ferry. While the space didn’t seem to be very large in the ferry, it actually had room for three cars side by side. It seems that I was early though, there were only two cars going to the island at that time. But looking at the lines, it seems the ferry has room for at least nine cars. Of course larger vehicles would take up more room and will be charged more. This is my first time doing this in Ireland and I am looking forward to the sights in Aranmore Island.
