Saint Honorat Church in Alyscamps

Saint Honorat Church turned out to be a significant church. This is the starting point of the Arles way of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela which is a UNESCO World Heritage site by itself. The route or hike is several hundred kilometers long and it takes a long time to complete. Even if I am not the type to do pilgrimages, I think it would be fun to just try this hiking route, thought I don’t know how to handle logistics like bringing your stuff. Perhaps it is delivered to the destination ahead of time? Anyway, the church of Saint Honorat is a relatively new addition to Alyscamps and it was never completed due to insufficient funds.

Still, there was a portion which was more or less completed. I think it would be more appropriate to describe it now as a chapel since it isn’t that large. The innermost part of Alyscamps features an imposing chapel featuring massive columns. There isn’t much light in here and it actually made even more creepy since I was at a cemetery. there were some sarcophagi here and I would assume that they belong to some important personalities. Apart from the sarcophagi there wasn’t really much to see here. I was trying to get out quickly since I was getting paranoid here they would close the doors of the chapel since it was already closing time. Needless to say, I made it out.
