Entering the Church of Saint Honorat

Because of the popularity of Alyscamps as a burial ground during the time of Roman empire, there were several churches which were built after the Christianization of the empire. Most were small chapels but others were bigger and probably the largest one in Alyscamps is the the Church of Saint Honorat. That being said, the church of Saint Honorat was actually never finished. There were bits and pieces of the church here but one can only imagine how the church was originally envisioned. The church turns out to be a relatively new addition to Alyscamp since it was only built in the 12th century.

The church practically takes up much of the furthest end of Alyscamps and it is the last place one can see in Alyscamps. Curiously enough, the history of the church itself is not very clear, however it is significant enough that it is part of a pilgrimage route of the Arles way of Santiago de Compostela. Apparently, there are several ways for the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage and Arles way is one of them. The Arles way actually starts at the church of Saint Honorat here in Arles and finishes all the way in Spain’s Santiago de Compostela which is yet another UNESCO World Heritage site.
