Roman Theater of Orange

The Roman Theater is an integral part of Roman society. This was the cinema before movies came. Back then people liked poetry, literature and culture more than people do today. This is probably because there weren’t too many distractions back then. So instead of looking through Facebook, people actually went out to watch a show with everyone else. Back then, powerful people would sponsor shows. This is to gain favor with the populace. In contrast, people now have to pay to be able to watch anything. The constant jostling for popularity ensured that there was a constant stream of entertainment for the people.

An entertained people is a subservient people. If you keep them happy, the people have less reason to revolt against you. This was probably the mindset of the Romans back then. Having conquered much of Europe, the Romans would have had a difficult time keeping the population under control. So with these theaters, people enjoy life a bit better. It also helps that it is free. The seating is also quite large, being able to seat up to seven thousand people. This is comparable to modern arenas. The seating is in an amphitheater and it lets people see more of the stage. Back then there was also a roof but this has been long gone. The roof would have served to improve the acoustics of the stage. This is incredible considering this was built two thousand years ago.
