Passageways Behind the Roman Theater of Orange

I was surprised to know that that Roman Theater of Orange is around two thousand years old. Certainly, the facade of the stage looks like it is old but I never thought it would be that old. It is said that the theater here in Orange was one of the first built in this area. The facade is one of the best preserved of its kind anywhere. I have been to several theaters but I haven’t seen one with a scaenae frons like this. While the stage certainly looks very old. The seating area definitely isn’t. The theater is actually still in use up to this day so the management decided to restore the seating for the safety of visitors.

Looking at the Stage

The seating area goes up much like how it does in a stadium. There are stairs which let viewers go to the exits are in various parts of the seating area. I went up these passageways and discovered that there were lined with bricks. I wasn’t sure if they were original but they look very nice. By using these passageways, visitors can move from place to place without disturbing the other patrons. From these passageways, they can then eventually exit the theater. The passageways aren’t very bright, fortunately there is still like coming from the outside.
