Tunnel in Pont du Gard

Inside the Tunnel at Pont du Gard

I was a bit disappointed when I visited the top of the Pont du Gard. I was hoping to be able to walk the aqueduct but I guess it was too dangerous for visitors to visit. From the looks of it, the walls of the aqueduct seemed to be high enough to prevent people from falling from the bridge. However, I also noticed that some walls weren’t existent. These leave visitors open to falling from the aqueduct. Not good when you are a tourist site. I went down the aqueduct when I noticed another path leading to what appears to be a tunnel.

I wasn’t expecting a tunnel here nor where there signs as to what the tunnel was for. I wasn’t sure if I should be going in the tunnel but I did anyway. It should not be dangerous since they left it open here. I would like to think that this tunnel is something ancient but I can’t really tell. The tunnel is straight so you can see all the way to the end. It wasn’t very long either so you won’t even have time to get nervous. The other end of the tunnel was rather anticlimactic since there wasn’t anything interesting to see on the other side. The maps don’t really tell me anything interesting here either.
