Walking on the Top of Pont du Gard

The aqueduct at Pont du Gard is an amazing piece of ancient architecture. I’m very impressed with how the ancient Romans mastered engineering to be able to transport water from far away places to the Roman cities. What is even more amazing is how durable these structures are. I have been to a few Roman aqueducts in Europe and they are all in very fine condition. Admittedly, some would have been fixed up for tourism even back then. In the end, the aqueduct doesn’t really do too much these days except serve as a reminder of the past. I then started to wonder what else can be done here at Pont du Gard.

Apparently, you can climb to the top of the aqueduct of Pont du Gard. There is a flight of stairs which bring visitors to the top. From here, visitors can see where the water flowed. The aqueduct doesn’t seem to be in use anymore but it is still blocked from tourists wishing to tread upon the famed aqueduct. There is a screened fence which keeps visitors away from the water way itself. It seemed to be large enough to fit an adult walking on it. It probably would have been an interesting experience to walk on top of these structures. Back then, people would be commissioned to clean these water ways to prevent build up algae and minerals on the walls. This is a big undertaking as well since the entire aqueduct system is fifty kilometers long.
