I understand that a calvary is a recreation of the calvary which is outside Jerusalem. This is supposed to recreate the locations of the passion and death of Jesus Christ. I won’t have time to visit the entire calvary at Kalwaria Zebrzydowska so I only need to focus on what I think is the highlight of the place. The sanctuary here is the Basilica of Saint Mary and it is the centerpiece of the entire calvary. It wasn’t that large and it is very quickly explored in a few minutes. What I didn’t know what that there was a monastery attached to the basilica.

The monastery is actually a building behind the church. It was difficult to tell from where I was. There was an exit from the side of the church which leads to the monastery building. I wasn’t really sure whether I actually made it to the monastery itself or whether I was still at some common area. There were paintings in the hallways of figures I do not recognize. There weren’t any signs here which would tell me what I was seeing or where I was for that matter. I quickly made my way out of this building and I found myself outside the church.
